From the President

Well, the dog days of summer are here and it is hot!! Many of you are also working to finalize budgets and complete projects funded in the current fiscal year (remember to include your request for funding to attend the 2016 Conference in San Antonio on May 3-6 ). As you may recall from my message in the last newsletter, the Board conducted a Strategic Planning Retreat (SPR) on June 15-16. Our objective was to examine where TAGITM is as an organization and to determine where we want to be in the next 3 to 5 years. I am happy to report that TAGITM is financially sound and showing healthy growth in membership. During the SPR the Board set goals to continue to grow the organization in membership, and in the value that we are able to provide to the members. At the same time we want to retain and strengthen those programs and values that have gotten us to this point. One of the areas the Board felt needed additional work was in marketing TAGITM to those organizations that are not yet members. To assist in this area, a new ad hoc Marketing Committee is being created. Scott Joyce with City of Euless has graciously volunteered to Chair this Committee.

Thank you for your continued support of TAG, and please feel free to contact me or any Board members with questions, comments, or concerns.

Making IT happen.
Ben Roper
TAGITM President

Organization in the Spotlight

Organization Name: City of Conroe
Conroe is located 40 miles north of Houston on I-45.  The population currently is 71,592.  Conroe is ranked #5 among the fastest growing US cities.  Conroe was originally established in the late 1800’s and became incorporated in 1904.  Lake Conroe with 22,000 acres and the Sam Houston Nation Forest provide Conroe residents lots of opportunity for outdoor activities.

Number of IT Workers in the Organization:
The IT department consists of 11 staff which includes 1 manager and 3 GIS employees.

Significant Technology Achievements:
Virtualization for 80% of the cities infrastructure.  Working towards 100%.  Utilization of SAN storage for DR strategy.

Plans for Future Technology Initiatives:
Construction of a new Police Station and installation of a VOIP system that will begin with the Police Department and migrate to all other City facilities.

Most Challenging Project:
VMWare virtualization and Nimble SAN storage project.  This project touched every City department in some way.  It has taken time to get everything migrated.  Project was accomplished with minimal user interruptions or downtown.

Most Rewarding Project:
The above mention project was one of our most rewarding projects due the increase efficiencies and DR capabilities that it provides. Another rewarding project IT accomplished was the live streaming and recording of Council meetings.  Not only did our citizens benefit but numerous staff has the opportunity to view meetings either live or at a later time so they feel more connected to City business.

What is Most Valuable About Being a TAGITM Member:
The networking aspect of TAG has been invaluable.  I am proud to be a part of this awesome group.
