The presentation will detail specific benefits of separate applications- Citrix and VMware. Driving factors in looking at VDI v. physical are: costs, roll out strategies, life cycle, maintenance/ management & security. Multiple components will be used to determine if VDI is a practical and cost effective strategy including: terminal attributes, desktop provisioning, security/virus control, OS and patching updates, back-up and remote access. Additionally, real costs associated with implementation immediately and overtime will be addressed. At conclusion, attendees will realize an understanding of the necessary challenges that are identified, questions to ask, and caveats discovered that will provide a basis to determine if VDI is an optimal path to pursue.

The Role of GIS in an IT Strategy
Keith Kite- Regional Team Manager, ESRI
Michael Parma- GIS Coordinator, City of New Braunfels

GIS is being deployed in larger organizations, serving larger user communities, and leveraging more complex data sets. The visualization and analytical capabilities of GIS are being called upon to increase efficiency across a wide variety of governmental responsibilities  public safety, planning, public works, elections, economic development, health and welfare issues, infrastructure and utility management. Most importantly, GIS is helping people find better solutions and make more informed decisions. Given that GIS implementations require basic IT tenets i.e. using disparate data to help form new information; managing and updating those data for consistency and reuse; and then conducting ongoing analysis and meaningful output, GIS is an important part of any IT strategy. This presentation will focus on the role and integration of current GIS technology in the IT enterprise as well as take a look at emerging GIS technologies for Web 2.0 applications and cloud computing. In addition the City of New Braunfels will detail how they have implemented an enterprise GIS system.

Why and How Denton County decided to go Completely Virtual
Steven Kaplan- VP Data Center Virtualization, INX
Kevin Carr- Director of Information Technology, Denton County

Denton County was having capacity challenges with its growing number of servers including space, power, cooling, network capacity and management.  As a Microsoft shop familiar with Windows, Denton County decided to utilize Microsoft Hyper-V on a pilot basis in order to begin alleviating the capacity constraints with virtualization. As the number of VMs continued to grow, IT management increasingly became aware of virtualization's capabilities to lower costs, reduce power usage and increase availability. They estimated that taking a strategic approach to virtualizing the entire data center would save the County nearly $2 million over a five-year period while requiring an investment of only $250,000. This presentation discusses both the decision to migrate to a virtual data center as well as how IT management was able to secure funds for the project with justifications such as ROI benefits and energy savings. It describes why the County decided to switch gears to a vSphere platform despite the free Microsoft hypervisor, and also covers the implementation strategy and products utilized. Future plans for virtual disaster recovery and desktop solutions are also covered.
